Everton sign Leroy Fer from FC Twente

In a move I doubted just an hour ago Everton have added FC Twente player Leroy Fer.  Sources have the final deal being for anywhere from £7m to £10m, but tend to believe it's on the lower end and as I stated in my early piece I expect some of the payments are delayed.

The move should stabalize the Toffees midfield with Darron Gibson and Kevin Mirallas spending much of the year injured.  The move also raises the continuing speculation of how long the team can retain Marouane Fellaini.

While Fer is considered a solid defensive midfielder he also has 10 goals in 29 apperances for FC Twente this season.  He is only 23 years old and has also been capped twice by the Netherlands national team so far.

Monday News and Rumor (Holtby move and Everton target)

It's being reported by The Daily Mail (so assume the feasability of these as very low) that two deals are nearing completion today.

'IMG_0126.jpg' photo (c) 2011, Thomas Rodenbücher - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/The first is a move to complete the transfer of Lewis Holtby now for £1.5m now to Spurs instead of waiting till his current deal is up this summer.  This number and deal have been floating around ever since Tottenham agreed to a deal that would bring the player in this summer, but nothing close to official yet.

Spurs manager AVB would love to add the player now as the team needs more options after a poor showing against Leeds this weekend.  I'm going to wait for comfirmation in another source this seems fairly solid.

On the other end of the spectrum is a piece saying Everton are closing in on a £7m deal for FC Twente midfielder Leroy Fer.  The interest of manager David Moyes does not seem far fetched as Fer makes a good option for when Marouane Fellaini is finally wrenched from his squad.  The problem is finding £7m in the Toffees bank accounts.

Moyes has made the case to draw againts the big TV money the team will get next year and the team did make an offer on Yan M'Vila.  The M'Vila offer had some payment delayed, so it's likely if this deal is true the same thing holds here.  On top of a Fellaini exit the team has been without midfielders Darron Gibson and Kevin Mirallas for most of the season and could use the help.

Liverpool adds Inter Milan Midfielder Philippe Coutinho

For a suspected fee of £8.5m the Liverpool management has reached an agreement for 20 year old midfielder Philippe Coutinho.  The deal still requires a medical and a work permit for Coutinho, but should be completed within the week.

Inter was reluctant to part with the player after turning down two offers from Liverpool and Southampton showing interest as well this January window.

Coutinho is a younger talent that can help Liverpool fight for the top four spot the team still strives to claim.  At the same time he'll only get better as the team looks to get better in the coming seasons.

It says a lot about Coutinho that his manager while on loan at Espanyol was current Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino who was trying very hard to beat Liverpool to sign him.  His preference was to join the Merseyside team though.

Liverpool had a rough summer after failing to add American Clint Dempsey.  This window has been much better with Courtinho being added to the  £12m addition of Daniel Sturridge.  The team still has to be concerned about the potential exit clause that could see striker Luis Suarez leave this summer for £30m, especially if the team fails to make the Champions League or even Europe.

Best Ten Signings in EPL January Window (so far)

The transfer window has time left and of course the last day is sure to be a tense day for fans, teams and players alike.  The movement in has been slow for many teams with several teams failing to add major targets yet.  Here is my rankings of the best signings so far.

1. Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool - There are plenty of problems in Sturridge game and it'll be interesting to see how he plays with more time on the field with Luis Suarez, but the early returns have been great for Sturridge in Red.  He's scored 2 goals in two league games and added another in cup play.

2. Demba Ba - Chelsea - Obviously not even close to a healthy Fernando Torres, but Ba brings some speed to the striker spot that Torres just hasn't had since his knee injury.  Rafa will still push to play Torres and how they play together and apart will be interesting.

3. Loic Remy - Queens Park Rangers - While Harry Redknapp was unable to secure international teammate Yan M'Vila, his first signing has hit the ground running and showing signs of being a big win for The Hoops.  After a fee was agreed on with Newcastle Rangers swooped in with a £8M bid and big money to sign the striker.  Will he be enough to stave off relegation is the question.

4.. Lewis Holtby - Spurs - The only player making the list who won't be helping his team this season.  Although Spurs continue to try and come to an agreement with Schalke 04 to get Holtsby in now, but the team continues to hold on to the player for the remainder of the German season.  This could be top 3 if RVB finds a way to bring him in now.

Wilfried Zaha Moves to United for £15M

In a move that will have no impact on this season for the currently league leading Red Devils, they have added 20 year old Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace for £15M (£5M payed later or based on clauses) with a 10% sell on fee.  The reason this will not be an impact on this season is it is expected that United will then loan Zaha back to Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season.

After being named the Football League Young Player of the Year after last season he has continued to impress in the 2012-2013 campaign.  With 5 goals in 26 Championship League caps playing as a winger or striker.  The Eagles have pushed in to promotion contention in the Championship with Zaha and will be glad to not have lost him for the remainder of the year.

Once he settles into the United side he'll be fashioned as a wide player supplying attack from the wing.  Although born in the Ivory Coast his family moved to England when he was four and is an English citizen and has one England cap so far.  He also qualifies as a "Home-Grown" player as well spending his time in the Crystal Palace youth system.

This is a good sell on for the Eagles as they maintain the player in their push for promotion this year and being only 2 points behind the second place spot could see a shot at the Premier League next season.  They also have at least £10M in hand with another £5M potentially on the way to stock the team if they qualify for promotion.

Yan Gouffran Completes Newcastle Move

Newcastle have quickly replaced striker Demba Ba with French striker Yoan Gouffran from French Ligue 1 team Bordeaux.  The final deal for the 26 year old player will be for four years.  The fee is undisclosed and the team will be leaning heavy on the new players including fellow Frenchmen Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

With only 2 points keeping the Toons out of the relegation zone they will need every point and every goal they can get in the rest of the 2012-2013 season.  The addition brings the number of french speaking players to 11 on the team or a complete starting XI of french speaking players. (although no starting keeper speaks the language)  This overwhelming number of french speakers could be a benefit to the team, especially for the new players.  It's also possible it isolates the rest of the team.

An interesting side note is Gouffran's reported allergy to grass.  Obviously it hasn't hampered him to any great extent, but for a footballer he's going to be spending every game out in a pitch of grass for up to 90 plus minutes.

Gouffran brings pace and intelligence, but will surely take some adjusting to the EPL.  On the other hand the additions to Newcastle and the loss of M'Vila have really made avoiding relegation a long shot for QPR at this point.

The Confusing Yann M'Vila Transfer

Rennes have confirmed the sale of midfielder Yann M'Vila to Russian side Rubin Kazan.  The team paid a hefty fee of €11.5 million for the player.  This was more than Rennes was seeking originally.  This looks like a great return for the solid defensive midfielder and the teams announced the deal was completed on Wednesday.

The interesting part of the deal is that Rubin Kazan has been banned from registering any players in the January window for failing to pay former striker Roman Adamov.  There has been no news from the Russian FA on this deal, but it would be interesting to see how the team plans to get around the inability to register the player.

With several English Premier League teams including QPR, Tottenham and Everton showing interest in the defensive player those teams should not give up just yet on the French International.  Unless the Russian FA gives in this deal doesn't seem like something that can pass the test.

If he does end up finding a way onto the Rubin squad it's a blow to QPR who appeared to be leading the chase with Everton a long shot looking to loan the player with an option later this summer.  Other teams are still keeping an eye on the player as well including Newcastle and Arsenal.
